Dismal Brook Wildlife Preserve

Date visited: 6/8/2022

As far as woodsy nature preserves go, you'd be hard pressed to find too many in the state nicer than this one! Jamie Gamble donated the land to the Granby Land Trust in 2020, so it has only been open to the public for a couple years. The trails are well defined, well maintained, and well marked. There are new benches and observation platforms along the three mile loop trail. There is even the Glazier Cabin, where you can sit on the porch! (The doors to the cabin itself are locked). This place is definitely worth checking out.

Holcomb Farm

Date visited: 10/11/2022

This is another nice spot in Granby. We started by taking some pictures around the farm buildings, then crossed the street to walk a 2.5 mile loop on the Eastern Trails. The loop starts in an open field, that offered an abundance of autumn color against a blue sky backdrop. The rest of the trail looped through the woods, and is a pretty standard wooded trail. We did not have time to visit the Western Trails, behind the farm buildings. This was a very nice early evening hike on a beautiful autumn afternoon.

Enders State Forest

Dates visited: 6/10/2021 & 6/13/2021

There's a cool series of waterfalls here, at least three decent sized ones. I couldn't get access to the biggest because there was a photo shoot going on with a swimsuit model. I hiked the trail, out and back, and they were still there when I got back. I also lost my phone on this hike. It fell out of my pocket when I was taking the fourth photo below. I actually didn't realize it for a bit and it took me about 20 minutes to find it. The bottom inch or two was submerged in the river wedged between two rocks. Had the rocks not been there, the phone would have floated away and eventually fallen down the 2nd waterfall (you can see those falls in the first picture below). Fortunately, the phone has good water resistance and seems no worse for wear. A shout out to the two young hikers who let me use their phone to call home so my wife could use the "find phone" feature to help me locate. It didn't work because there was no service in the river, but the hikers were still super helpful! UPDATE: I went back three days later and was able to access the top waterfall. It turns out, that one is not the biggest, and actually seemed kind of lame. It probably wasn't worth the return trip!

Farmington Canal Heritage Trail

Date visited: 1/2/2021 & 1/4/2021

This is part of the multi-town trail that follows the path of the old Farmington Canal and subsequent train line. It passes in and out of Granby and East Granby a couple of times. We've walked the entire section in Granby and East Granby.

Salmon Brook Park

Dates visited: 11/29/2020, 6/30/2021 & 7/20/2022

We came here for a brief visit in November '20. We came in through the alternate entrance on Rt. 20 and hiked a short way on a trail that overlooked Salmon Brook. Fast forward, seven months, and we've been unable to go on any adventures for a few days because of the massive heat wave in the area. I read about the Granby Dog Park, which is part of this park, and the swimming area behind the park that people take their dog's to cool off. I figured I'd tale Mandy and Lexi to cool off, especially since Mandy has been jumping into oceans, lakes and rivers on her own anyway lately. They seemed to like it at first, but looking at their expressions in some of these pictures, I'm not sure they enjoyed swimming all that much. We returned on a really hot day in July of 2022. They're much more comfortable with the water now, and they jumped right in! We also saw the coolest little yellow bird here, also trying to cool off.

McLean Game Refuge

Date visited: 7/9/2020

We hiked a loop trail around the pond here. I did not realize that the Bear sighting the day before was at this park because it was in the Simsbury section. Of course, I doubt the bear would know what town he is in! Fortunately, we did not encounter any bears.
