The Farmington Canal Heritage trail is a multi-town trail with two sections in Connecticut. This section runs from Plainville to the Massachusetts border, where it continues as the Southwick Rail Trail. The first time visited the Avon portion, we walked the section between Sperry Park north up into Simsbury on a beautiful autumn day. The second time was on an unusually cool Fourth of July, and we did from Thompson Road North to the center of Avon and back, covering 3.5 miles of the trail (but walking 7 miles!). The sections in Avon are the nicest portions of the trail so far. The path through the center of Avon looks like it was re-routed off the main right of way to get off the main roads. I like that area, it has a wonderful village charm. The tunnel under Route 44 is pretty neat too. Our third visit, we once again started at Thompson Road, but this time headed south into Farmington.

This is a town park with an old-fashioned covered bridge. There are some short trails on the other side of the bridge that connect to Buckingham Park and a series of walking trails.

This is a town park with a playground and athletic fields. There is also a series of paved walking trails that run through the nearby neighborhood. Some of the trails pass behind backyards and between houses. There are also connecting trails that lead to Countryside Park.
