Mallory Preserve

Date visited: 5/1/2021

I use the All-Trails app as my guide for many of our adventures. Usually, any issues with it are that a trail that is marked "easy" is really not that easy. That wasn't the issue here, this is a very easy trail. The issue is the trail route in the app does not reflect where the trail really was. I had a tough time just finding the beginning of the trail, as I was in the parking lot of a small town shopping center. I finally discovered the trail head, only to find that the route is not anywhere near the path in the app! The trail itself is very nice. There are lots of stone walls, which seem to be common in southern parts of the state. There is a long boardwalk that leads to the main loop. At the far end of the loop is a new bridge that connects the Mallory Preserve with the Schneckenburger Preserve. I think they may refer to it as the Mallory Schneckenburger Preserve now. At any rate, there is a sign posted on the new bridge warning that there are no marked trails on the other side of the bridge and to avoid them so you don't get lost. New trails would be built this year. I could see that the work has started, as there are definitely trails on the other side of the bridge. This was the second of four planned stops today, so I didn't really have extra time to explore, so I stayed on the marked trails.

Sherman Green

This is the area that I parked and explored for about 15 minutes before I found the trail head for the Mallory Preserve. It offered some nice scenery, so I took a few photos while I was exploring.

Veteran's Memorial Park

I think every town has a park called "Veteran's Memorial Park". Sherman's is a nice park with a half mile stone dust walking trail that loops around the park. Part of the trail runs along side Sawmill Brook, which made for some nice pictures. The walking trail loops around a ball field and a playground. It's a nice place to stop for a quick walk.

On our Appalachian Trail hike in Kent, we crossed the Ned Anderson Memorial Bridge that leads into Sherman. While I wasn't planning on going too far in Sherman, since the trail here goes straight up a mountain, I was going to explore a bit. We ran into a big problem at the end of the bridge. There is a ladder-like staircase to get down off the bridge which was too steep and scary for the dogs....well, Mandy at least. I'm pretty sure Lexi would have been able to make it. Mandy, who doesn't really like bridges to begin with, was like, "No Way!", so the only part of the trail we made it to in Sherman was the end of the bridge.
