This is the park that runs along the Connecticut River. It provides nice views of Downtown Hartford, and most of it is cleared of snow in the winter. The paved walking trail extends from the Bulkley Bridge, past the Charter Oak bridge, past Goodwin college, under Route 2, all the way down to the Pratt & Whitney complex. The section south of the Charter Oak Bridge was not cleared of snow the day we visisted. We returned over a year later to walk that section.

The Hockanum River Linear Park consists of a number of trails that follow the Hockanum River through East Hartford, Manchester, Vernon and Ellington. They are not all connected, but they are all very interesting. I love these trails, they have so much unique character. These are not your typical "escape to nature" trails. Some of them pass under highway under passes, and near water treatment facilities, behind shopping plazas, apartment complexes and landfills. They are not for everyone, but I like how different they are from your typical trails. I decided to give these trails their own pages, so go here to read about them.

The Charter Oak Greenway is a multiple purpose trail that runs from East Hartford, east through Manchester, ending at Bolton Notch. The entire stretch is part of the East Coast Greenway. This isn't my favorite walking trail. It mostly runs along side of I-84 throughout the East Hartford stretch.

This is a town park which consists mostly of soccer fields. There is also a 0.4 mile loop trail through the woods that borders a school bus depot behind the lot. In addition to the trail, we walked around the perimeter of the park. It was about a mile and a half in total. It wasn't that exciting of a park.

I didn't know this place existed. It showed up in the All-Trails app recently, but the reviews didn't make it sound like much. I was pleasantly surprised, as the place isn't that bad. There's a narow dirt road that leads up to the trail head. We walked the 1.2 mile loop trail. It was a but muddy in places, and some trees had fallen recently, but it was nothing we couldn't get around. The unique part of this trail is that a part of it runs along side the East Hartford Golf Club. We were able to sneak up to the golf course and take a few pictures.

Now that Daylight Savings Time has ended, there's no way to get out for adventures after work. The weather was so nice, that we made a quick stop during my lunch hour for a quick walk. There's not a lot here, this is the Town Green smack dab in Downtown East Hartford. But since we didn't have a lot of time, it worked out perfectly.

I honestly have no idea how I didn't find this trail sooner. It's the kind of trail we do often and it's less than a half hour away from our home base. This trail, maintained by Goodwin College, runs along the east bank of the Connecticut River through three towns. The entire trail is about 1.7 miles long (3.4 out and back), mainly through East Hartford and Glastonbury, but there is a short section through Wethersfield in the middle... yes Wethersfield!. You can read more about how part of Wethersfield wound up on the east side of the river on the Wethersfield page. The trail is paved through East Hartford, but is a wide dirt surface the rest of the way. Honestly, I think the nicest section of the trail is right at the beginning near the parking area with the covered carport. There are a few places toward the beginning of the trail that provide access to the river and are quite scenic.

This is an off-shoot of the Charter Oak Greenway that heads to the Bissell Bridge in Windsor, with a large "on-raod" section in South Windsor.

This is a town park that features a playground, athletic fields and a pool. There's also an old paved road, that is blocked off from traffic that leads down to a small pond. We walked around the perimeter of the park, and down the old road, about a mile in total. There's nothing really special here, but it was somewhere close enough that we were able to visit after work. It gave us something to do on leap day!
