Swampscott

Olmsted Historic District

Date visited: 11/30/2023

This is the area along the Lynn border that includes the extreme north end of the Lynn Shore Reservation, and the scenic area around the town hall across the street, which includes Linscott Park and Swampscott Gardens. This was the north end of our walk up the walkway along side Lynn Shore Road, that started at Nahant Beach Reservation and included the segment through Lynn. The bright clored plants provided a nice photo backdrop.

Eisman's Beach

Date visited: 4/4/2025

I had a difficult time figuring out the dog rules for the beaches in Swampscott. The "Rules and Regulations" PDF on the town's website states dogs are not allowed at all, however, there are three other pages on the site that indicate they are allowed in the off-season. I'm not sure about the exact dates. I think they are prohibited from the beach from May 20 through October 1st, but another page had the days mixed up and said May 1st through October 20th. According to one of the pages, dogs can be off-leash (through the page misspelled leash as "lease", I guess you can't loan your dogs out!) between the water and the high-tide line. As such, there were a few off-leash dogs running around here. To get here, we parked at Phillips Park and walked a short pathway that led to Johnson Park, a small grassy area in front of the beach. The beach is also known by "Whales Beach" and "New Ocean House Beach" on some maps. The Boston skyline is visible in the distance. This wasn't my favorite beach we visited. The waves are mild here, but the water looked kind of mucky to me. Mandy got muddy here when she sat in the water. There was also a washed-up, dead seal on the beach, which was unfortunate for sure. Lexi, of course, loves running off-leash on the beach. and Mandy loves laying in the water when the waves are mild, so the dogs loved it!

Preston Beach

Date visited: 4/4/2025

This is a beach that sits on the town line of Swampscott and Marblehead. The Town of Swampscott's website has a map outlining a walk between this beach and Phillips Beach, about a half mile south. The website indicates the walk is best done at low-tide. I would learn from my mistake and follow that advice! Low tide was around 11:30 AM, but we went to Eisman's Beach first and didn't get here until around 2 PM or so, and we explored the Marblehead section first. We didn't start the walk the walk to Phillips Beach until about 2:20 PM. As we were making our way down the shoreline, the sandy beach area was getting more narrow by the minute. We walked on the rocks in places, and mostly stayed out of the water at first. We got about 90% of the way there, but the water was right up against the rocks now. The rocks were larger here, and Mandy and Lexi did not want to climb them and insisted on turning around. That was a mistake. By this time, our sandy walkway was gone. We headed back on the rocks, but we soon were forced to walk through the water the rest of the way. In just 15 minutes, our sandy walkway was now knee deep in cold ocean! Keep in mind, I had pants, sneakers and socks on! It was 60 degrees out, but the water was cold. Mandy and Lexi wound up actually doing the doggie-paddle part of the way. Needless to say, they were not pleased! I didn't take any photos of us getting stuck in the water, but I did take a photo of the aftermath. You can see the dogs facial expression...that says it all! In hindsight, we would have been fine if we did this walk right when we got there. Also, we should have just continued through the water to Phillips Beach, instead of turning around. We wouldn't have been in the water nearly as long as were. When we got back to the beach area, after taking a break on a bench to dry off a bit, we headed to Phillips Beach via Atlantic Avenue and Shepard Avenue. (I had always intended to return via that route). In the end, everyone was fine, just a bit wet, and a lesson was learned!

Phillips Beach

Date visited: 4/4/2025

We walked here from Preston Beach. (Be sure the read that story!) As with all the beaches in Swampscott, dogs are allowed in the off-season and can be off-leash between the water and the high-tide line. Lexi, once again, took this opportunity to get the zoomies out of her system. This was also the only part of the day where it was truly sunny out. There was a thin layer of clouds filtering the sun most of the day, but it was nice and bright while we were here. Like the other beaches we've visited in town, I wasn't overly impressed. The beach was filled with small pebbles. It wasn't the kind where it would be nice to walk through barefoot. The dogs liked being off-leash though, so this is a great place to bring the dogs in the off-season.
