North Smithfield
Blackstone Gorge

This is a very fun trail. The trail starts in Blackstone, MA but the majority of the trail resides in North Smithfield, RI. The dam and waterfall are in Blackstone. I let the dogs take a quick dip into the river as soon as we got there since it was such a hot day, that's why the dogs look wet in some of these photos. The trail quickly crosses into Rhode Island as it continues along side the Blackstone River. The terrain is rocky and rooty enough to be fun, but not too rocky and rooty to be very difficult. There's a complete landscape change toward the end of the trail as it turns away slightly from the river. Per the route on the All-Trails app, we turned around at the strange old building and headed back. The pictures below are from the North Smithfield, RI section of the trail.

This is an odd bike trail, in that this section is very short. The overall Blackstone River Greenway is not completed yet, and this section, disconnected from the rest of the trail, is only about a half mile long in total. It starts at Cold Spring Park in Woonsocket, crosses a newish looking bridge over the Blackstone River into North Smithfield, before ending abrubtly at the Massachusetts border. It's a nice section of bike trail for sure, but not very helpful for bikers trying to get from Worcester to Providence. It is a great place to take the dogs for a walk though! The pictures below are from the North Smithfield section of the trail.

The main portion of the trail just grazes the corner of North Smithfield, between Woonsocket and Lincoln. The marker has all three towns on it.
North Smithfield Schools

We were driving through this town, and something remarkable happened. The sun came out, along with some actual blue sky! It had been hazy and smoky most of the week, so this was a welcome sight. We passed by the schools and decided to go for a quick one mile walk to enjoy the blue sky. These grounds include both the High School and the Middle School, as well as the athletic fields, a frisbee golf course, and a tennis court.

Rocky Hill Conservation Area

This is a typical nature preserve. There's a well maintained trail that leads out to a loop. The trail is rocky in some places, but it was still an easy walk. The trail runs near a power line cutout, and you can hear the hum from the lines. The entire trail is only about three quarters of a mile long. It's a nice walk through the woods, but not very memorable.
Meadows Recreation Area

While were were walking the new section of the Blackstone River Greenway in Blackstone, MA, we continued our walk along the North Smithfield and Woonsocket sections of the trail. We didn't take many photos along the trail itself, since we had visited these sections before. Just off the trail is this park that features a ball field and an open grassy area. There is also a short path south of the bike trail that leads to a fishing spot along the river.
Booth Pond Conservation Area

This is a very cool set of trails in North Smithfield and Woonsocket. There are a few dedicated parking spots for the trail at the Downling Village Apartments. The start of the trail is mowed grass. It had poured about an hour before our arrival, so the grass was very wet. The trail eventually heads into the woods and passes by Booth Pond. There are a couple of scenic spots, but we had some issues with a part of trail being washed out. The trail runs along the town line for a bit, and some of the photos from this hike are on the Woonsocket page. We wound up hiking two miles here. It's a nice set of trails, but it was just a bit wet for our visit. One more thing to note, with this adventure in North Smithfield, we've now visited all 39 towns in Rhode Island in 2026. We did this in 2022 and 2025 as well, but it's still a nice accomplishment.
