Nipmuc River Trail

Date visited: 7/28/2022

This is a pretty nice trail. The trail starts on a right of way along the right side of a large field, before heading into the woods. The trail is impeccably maintained, with a few informational signs along the way. The trail reaches the river, where the dogs had a chance to cool off before completing the rest of the loop.

Burrillville Recreation Trail & Duck Pond

Date visited: 8/21/2022

This trip was a combination paved bike path and wooded trail. We hiked the wooded trail to get to the duck pond. There is a paved trail that leads to the duck pond as well. The duck pond had no ducks, and it wasn't really much of a pond either. Rhode Island is going through a severe drought right now, and water levels are low throughout the area. Both the bike trail and wooded trail were pretty standard fare. They weren't all that interesting.

Burrillville Recreation Trail

Date visited: 8/11/2026

This isn't the kind of adventure we usually do more than once, but looking at my previous photos in the Apple Photos map view, it looked like we had only walked about half the trail when we visited four years prior. In actuality, we walked most of the trail that time but I just didn't use any of the photos from the first half of the trail! On our previous trip, we actually accessed the trail that leads to the Duck Pond. This time around, we stayed on the main trail from start to finish, parking at the Eastern Avenue lot, and headed east to Harrisville and back. There are side trails to explore, and the area is very popular with dog walkers. Along with our exploration of Harrisville, the whole walk was about three and a half miles. Be aware, there is a gradual incline headed west, so our entire walk back was up hill. We arrived late in the day, and the sun was out for a bit after a gloomy day, so it was a pretty nice walk overall.

Tri-State Trail

Date visited: 11/9/2020

This is a cool hike to the corner of where three states intersect. We start from the Air-Line trail, and then hike up a pretty steep hill. We arrive at the peak and there is a marker to indicate the borders of Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. I know it's really silly, but I kept posing the dogs so that one of them would be standing in one state, and the other one would be in another state, until I got every combination.

Pulaski State Park

Date visited: 6/17/2024

This is exactly the type of place I think of when I envision a state park. There's a pond with a swimming area, plenty of picnic spots, cabin-type structures, large pines trees, and of course hiking trails. We hiked a mile and a half loop that circles Peck Pond. We started counter-clockwise, and made our way around the pond. A short section toward the end of the loop veers into the Connecticut towns of Putnam and Thompson. Upon completing the loop, we met Lucy, who lost her engagement ring while swimming at the beach area. (Lucy in the sky without her diamond....sorry, I couldn't resist!) Anyway, she asked me to mention it here, in case anyone reads this and finds her ring. If so, feel free to contact me via the email link on the home page, and I can provide her contact information. It's a long shot, but I told her I'd post it here. I hope she is able to recover her ring!

White Mill Park

Date visited: 10/15/2024

This is a small park at the site of an old mill. The park area is nice, and the fall colors really pop. There are trails on each side of the bridge, but they are not blazed and haven't been well maintained. One trail splits off into two, but one is a dead end while the other leads to someone's backyard. The trail between the parking lot and stream just goes out to a street. The trails are overgrown, and there were two fallen trees that I had to limbo under to continue. We only walked a mile here. This park is a great scenic spot in the fall, but the trails are not worth the effort.

George Washington Management Area

Date visited: 8/18/2025

This was the Burrillville section of our "Walkabout Trail" hike through George Washington Management Area, that started and ended near the campground in Glocester. This portion passed by Wilbur Pond, but there was no real access to the pond from the trail. The Walkabout Trail is 7+ miles, so we took a short cut that skipped the western part of the loop, and kept our hike to a more manageable 5 miles or so. After the pond, the trail was a bit more boring, but still a nice walk through the woods on a beautiful day.

Oakland Mill

Date visited: 5/4/2026

I read about the ruins of an old mill and thought it would be a fun spot to go with the dogs. Unfortunately, there's not much to do with the dogs here other than take a few photos. The mill is not really safe to explore with the dogs. The short trail is narrow and we had to be real careful with the broken glass everywhere. If the tree limb hadn't fallen on the narrow walkway across the river, I might have tried to traverse it, but thought better of it with the dogs. The mill is pretty cool to see, but it's not really a dog friendly spot. We went to a nearby park next.

Burrillville Park

Date visited: 5/4/2026

We stopped at this park after visiting the Oakland Mill. The park is pretty small. It's mainly a grassy area with a playground. There are no trails or anything to explore. We were only there for a few minutes, before I had to find somewhere else nearby to visit before it got too late.

Stillwater Mill Center

Date visited: 8/11/2026

This is the area around downtown Burrillville, specifically the Harrisville section of town. There is a nice, modern looking park with a pavilion, a short walking trail, and a playground. There is also a short walkway behind the library along side the river. Across the street is the dam/waterfall for the Harrisville Mill Pond. There's a park over there known as "Freedom Park", but it is currently closed and under construction, but the pedestrian bridge across the river with views of the waterfall is still open. There is also a boat launch area, where Mandy and Lexi were able to cool off in the pond. We arrived here via the bike path, but there is plenty of parking here too. It's a nice spot to relax and enjoy the afternoon.

Pascoag Village

Date visited: 8/13/2026

This is a nice little town center with a few small shops and restaurants, and some small park areas. There's a number of pedestrian walkways with elaborate bridges over the Pascoag River. It's a nice walk around the village, but not very long. We extended our walk by heading down South Main Street and Reservoir Road to get to the fishing area.

Union Pond Fishing Area

Date visited: 8/13/2026

We walked over to this spot while checking out Pascoag Village. There's a very short dirt road that leads to a parking area and a grassy area, along with a boat launch. Of course, Mandy and Lexi took the opportunity to cool off in the water.
