Ansonia Nature Center

Date visited: 5/25/2023

This is a pretty nice trail that is a combination of woods and open field areas. The field areas were overgrown. I think they are supposed to be mowed, but they weren't mowed. We plowed through. I was concerned about ticks, but only found a couple on the dogs, so it wasn't too bad. The loop we walked was about 3 1/2 miles. There is a playground and soccer fields near the start of the trail. We arrived just after 5PM, but be aware, the parking lot fills up fast after that if there are games going on. There is also a nature center building that was not open.

Ansonia River Walk

Date visited: 1/18/2021

This is another one of those multi-town multi-use trails. This one follows the Naugatuck River. It has different names in different towns. It's not completed yet, but we walked the entire section in Ansonia. We planned to continue on to the Derby section, but that didn't work out. The view wasn't spectacular. I believe across the river is a shopping plaza anchored by a Target.

Fountain Lake

Date visited: 4/20/2021

This is a small "lake" that straddles the border of Ansonia and Seymour. "Lake" is a generous term, it could be a pond maybe, but it is more of a giant puddle! There's a half mile trail that circles the body of water (Fountain Lake Reservoir is the name on the map). The trail is actually quite nice, although a bit short. There are a lot of tall pine trees, that makes the whole path rather scenic. When we got back to the car, there were two young adults smoking a bone in the parking lot. One of them looked at Mandy and Lexi, and asked if I had three pugs! They were quite stoned! Of course it was 4/20, so it was appropriate!

Witek Park Trails

Date visited: 12/28/2022

This is the continuation of the trail that starts at Witek Park in Derby. Despite a series of long bridges, this section of the trail is not as well maintained as the Derby section. The trail is overgrown in places, and a large pine tree has recently fallen, probably from the wind storm that hit the area the prior week. The trail ends at Ansonia High School Chargers Field. The All-Trails app has the loop trail continuing past the soccer field, but there is no trail there, at least not anymore. Not only that, to complete the loop back to Witek Park, you would need to walk on a busy street without sidewalks. Instead, we turned around and headed back the way we came.
