Somersville Pond

Date visited: 5/3/2020

This park is a scenic spot in the Somersville section of Somers. It is near the spot where the old mills were located. There are no trails right here, but there is a trail across the street that connects to the Scantic River State Park. We stopped here looking for something to do early on in the pandemic. The weather was nice, and we got some good pictures.

Camp Aya-Po

Date visited: 11/25/2020

This place used to be a summer camp. There's a nice lake, we did the loop trail around it. We also hiked the "Old Shenipsit Trail" which featured a really big hill!

Scantic River State Park

Date visited: 6/29/2020 & 3/30/2021

The East and South sections of Scantic River State Park extend into Somers from Enfield. The East section is the main section for Somers, accessible from Rt. 190. We hiked this section in late June. The South section connects from Bailey Road in Enfield to the area across from Somersville Pond. We hiked into Somers, but turned around due to a water crossing that was missing. We could have done it but I didn't really feel like getting the dogs muddy. The picture near the horse farm, might not be part of the State Park. We were on a trail that followed the power lines from the end of Bailey Road in Enfield to the end of Scitico Road in Somers.

Shenipsit State Forest

Dates visited: 12/23/2021 & 1/1/2023

The first time we stopped here, it was a brief visit. It was after 4PM at the end of December, and there was only about 20 minutes of daylight left, so we didn't explore too much. We hiked a short portion of the blue blazed Shenipsit Trail. We returned on New Year's Day 2023, for our "first day hike", and this time we hiked the entire 2 1/2 mile loop up the mountain. It was a very busy spot as New Year's Day is a popular hiking day. The first third of our hike was via a paved park road that was closed to traffic this time around (it wasn't during our previous visit). The road leads to the top of the mountain where there is an observation tower. The next third of the hike is down the mountain via a gravel road, and the last third is on a standard trail that loops back to the parking lot. There are other trail options as well. It was a good hike, but there was noise from gunshots in the distance throughout. Part of the paved road dips into Ellington, and there are pictures from that section on the Ellington page. The pictures below are from the Somers section and cover both of our visits.
