Woods Hollow Nature Preserve

Date visited: 5/26/2024

This is a good old-fashioned walk in the woods. We haven't been doing many of these kinds of adventures lately. We've had a wet spring, and everything has been real muddy. Also, we've done so many of these kinds of adventures over the past four years, that I'm kind of bored with them. We didn't plan on coming here. We went to Congress Park in nearby Saratoga Springs first, but I had planned to visit a nearby bike trail or the state park next. It was too hot for the bike trail, and there was a Dave Mathews Band concert at the performing arts center located smack in the middle of the state park, so we came here instead. It's an okay walk in the woods for sure, with a maze of well kept trails, and a mucky pond in the middle. Fortunately, it was dry...very little mud! We followed the All-Trails route, which runs about two miles. It's not dissimilar to any other walk in the woods we've done over the years. It's worth doing if these kinds of hikes are your thing, and you are in the area.

Ballston Spa Village

Date visited: 5/25/2026

Happy Memorial Day! It was a rough weekend, as it pretty much rained from Friday evening through Monday early afternoon. The sun was out up in Saratoga County, so that's where we headed. We walked through the Ballston Spa Village. The village itself is actually part of two towns. Most of the section we walked is Milton, but there are a few additional photos on the Ballston page. The village is cute, with a nice main street, and a few parks, and shops, though most of the shops were closed for the holiday. The National Bottle Museum is also located in the village, but it was closed as well. We walked about three miles, and made it a loop, utilizing the Jim Tedisco Fitness Trail for part of the walk. We also checked out the Old Iron Spring, which is located in the village. It was a nice walk and good to see some sun again!

Jim Tedisco Fitness Trail

Date visited: 5/25/2026

This trail runs from Prospect Street south to Front Street near the Old Iron Spring. While "fitness trail" is in the name, it's really just a nice and easy walking trail. There's a small parking lot on the Prospect Street side, and some street parking on the Front Street side, but we walked the trail as part of our loop around the Ballston Spa Village.

Old Iron Spring

Date visited: 5/25/2026

This is a historic spring located in the Ballston Spa Village. It's a small park near the Brookside Musseum with a few benches and the Ballston Spa Lions Club Music Park stage. Water from the spring still bubbles up from the ground. According to local lore, the water has healing properties and some people swear by it, but others say it has an "iron" taste and that you shouldn't consume too much of it. It's a nice little spot to check out if you're in the area, and it's located right near the Jim Tedisco Fitness Trail, so it's easy to include in a walk around the village.
