Twin Cities Rail Trail

Date visited: 3/15/2025

This is a paved trail that runs through Leominster and Fitchburg. On this day, we walked the entire Leoninster section of the trail. We briefly crossed into Fitchburg, before turning around and returning to where we park in Leominster. The pictures below are from the Fitchburg section. We plan to return soon and finish the rest of the trail in Fitchburg.

We returned a week after we finished the Leominster section of this trail to finish the Fitchburg portion as well. There are four parking spots where the trail crosses Benson Street. We started from there as this was our turn around spot last time. We headed north toward downtown Fitchburg. While the Leominster section of trail was pleasant, this section was not. There was trash everywhere, as well as broken glass! It got worse the closer to the center of Fitchburg we got. To the east of the trail, down an embankment was what looked like a homeless camp, with at least a dozen tents. The dedicated trail ends near 4th street, but the path continues along some city streets guided by green signs. It eventually just ends unceremoniously at Railroad Street, and we turned around and headed back, walking just shy of 3.5 miles total. This was such a disappointing walk after completing the Leominster section last week.

Coggshall Park

Date visited: 3/22/2025

In need of more steps after our unfortunate bike trail walk, I looked for somewhere else to go on Google Maps and found this place. We should have just come here first, and skipped the bike trail altogether! This park is beautiful! There are a number of different trails here, but we simply hiked the half mile loop trail around Mirror Lake. The rock with the Peter Gabriel lyrics written on it is a nice touch. I had the song stuck in my head the rest of the afternoon! We will have to return and check out more of the park on a sunnier day. We also wasted all the day's sunshine while on the bike trail too! Live and learn I guess! This is definitely a nice place to bring the dogs for a walk.
