Minuteman Bikeway

Date visited: 3/8/2024

This was a fun walk! I really enjoy these kind of bike trails when they go through town centers like this one does. This bikeway is known as "America's Revolutionary Rail Trail", and is in the national Rail Trail Hall Of Fame. It starts in Cambridge, and runs through Arlington, Lexington and Bedford. We actually walked a small section of this trail during a previous adventure in Lexington. For this trip, we parked at Thorndike Field (parking is free at this lot), about a quarter of a mile from the start of the trail in Cambridge. We headed west toward the Arlington town center. We passed by Spy Pond Park, which can be accessed from the bike trail. After checking out the park, we continued to the town center, where we veered off the trail a bit to walk around the downtown area. The highlight is the Uncle Sam Statue, which is actually right off the bike path. We continued on for a bit, before turning around and heading back. On our way back, we walked past our car to the end of the trail in Cambridge, near Alewife Station. There are a number of other trails at that end that we didn't explore, since by this point, we had already walked over five miles. We'll have to check them out at a later date. This was a very busy, and very interesting bike trail, on a very mild and sunny Friday afternoon.

Spy Pond Park

Date visited: 3/8/2024

This is a town park right off the Minuteman Bikeway. There is access to the pond, but signs warning against swimming because of bacteria levels. There were people fishing though! Near the park, is Spy Pond Field, a baseball theme with a large cement grandstand that we climbed up. After checking out the park, pond, and field, we returned to the bike trail, to continue our adventure.
