My Mom grew up in Shelton, and one day while I went with my folks to visit my Grandma who still lived there, I walked part of this trail with my Dad and Mandy (I didn't have Lexi yet). I re-visited this trail about five years later, though I believe this was a different section of the trail. It is a very nice trail. It seems very well maintained, and it crosses a good section of the town. I plan to come back and hike the other sections sometime soon. UPDATE: I did return, but it wasn't that soon. It was over eleven months later. It was a gloomy and unseasonably warm day in December, and after hiking the Turkey Trot Trail, we continued across the street, passing by the Shelton Dog Park. We hiked a ways until we reached where we left off in January. We also hiked a bit of the Paugussett Trail, which for a while runs parallel with the Rec Path, but gets much closer to Hope Lake. We returned again a few weeks later and walked the last section of the trail by Pines Lake. The section near the lake is beautiful, even in the middle of winter.

The plan was to go to Indian Well State Park, but when we arrived we were greeted by a number of "No Pets Allowed" signs. It looks like dogs are allowed on the trail, but the trail seemed a bit too difficult for us. We passed Riverview Park on the way, and I decided to go there instead. This is a very nice town park. There is a short white blazed trail known as "The Bluff Walk", and we walked the full length of that. The trail overlooks the Naugatuck River and the railroad tracks, but doesn't go down that far. We also walked around the actual park, which is also very nice.

I love the name of this trail. The "Turkey Trot Trail", along with a section of the Shelton Lakes Recreation Path, form a loop around one of the Shelton Lakes, known as "Silent Waters". This was a real fun trail, on a gloomy gray, but unseasonably warm day.

One of the side trails off the Shelton Lakes Recreation Path, is the Dog Paw Path. The cool thing about this trail, it is blazed with a painted dog paw on the trees, instead of a painted color. It's a shortcut to the Shelton Dog Park. We did everything but actually go inside the dog park. It looked nice, but it was extremely muddy and there wasn't any other dogs their for Mandy and Lexi to play with anyway.
