This is the tale of two trails, even though it's really one trail. The loop starts out very scenic as it passes near some barns, and other farm type buildings. It heads out through a meadow, and then runs between a rock wall and a pine forest, and offers some really nice views. The trail leaves Avalonia Land Conservancy property briefly as it passes near a pond and someone's backyard, before heading into the woods. This is where the trail takes a turn, as the ground turns very swampy. At first, there was a narrow walkway that avoids the muck, but then there is just too much muck. I had to pick up both dogs (one in each arm), and trudge through the muck. After that section, the trail improves as it approaches a clearing with a nice bench, where we stopped for a break. I really enjoyed the trail, up until the swampy part.

This looks like a nice park from the parking lot, but I wouldn't know because dogs aren't allowed in the park at all. What kind of park doesn't allow dogs? There's a trail off to the side, that sneaks in and out of neighboring Ledyard. It's called the "Dog Trail" and is designated for dog walking, since they can't go to the actual park. It's not much of a trail. As you can see from the last picture, the dogs are relegated to the ugly part of the park. Preston doesn't seem all that dog friendly.
