North Stonington

Hangman Hill Preserve

Date visited: 4/18/2021

This wasn't the trail in North Stonington I intended on hiking. I actually planned to go to a place called Tefftweald at Birchenturn Nature Preserve. I got all the way there, only to see that dogs were not allowed! I found Hangman Hill Preserve nearby, after driving down a road lined with stone walls. Hangman Hill Nature Preserve features a very nice trail with more stone walls...just a very short trail. It was less than a half mile. There are a lot of stone walls in this area, and I wonder if that's how Stonington and North Stonington got their names.

This was a fun hike. The trail had the right balance of obstacles, they were challenging, but not too challenging that they were too difficult to overcome. The rock formation was a highlight. The trail had some overgrown and muddy spots as well. One required me to carry the dogs over. There was also a really rickety bridge over a small stream, that I wasn't sure was going to hold out. Like I said, this was a fun hike!

This is the rest area on I-95 just after you enter Connecticut from Rhode Island. I thought this was a nice backdrop for a photo, but it was getting dark and is not as nice as it looked in my mind.

If you're looking for a nice hike in the woods, this certainly isn't a bad choice. There are two different loop trails here, that form sort of a warped figure-8. The trails are well maintained, and well marked. The yellow blazed loop is the first one, with the red blazed loop behind it. They are connected by a bridge over the Green Falls River. The whole thing is about 2.6 miles, with a lot of ups and downs, but nothing too crazy. It was relatively dry, considering all the rain that's been in the area of late. There was one area where the trail was a bit flooded, but it was easy to navigate around. We've done so many of these wooded nature preserve hikes over the past four years, that they are kind of boring to me now. Other than some remnants of some old stone buildings, this one really wasn't that scenic, especially this time of the year, on a damp and gray day. In fact, I chose this place because there was rain in the forecast all around the region, but only a 12% chance of rain in this part of the State. Of course that means it started rain on us when we were just over half way through the loops. It was a light, but steady rain, so most of the photos below are from the first half of the hike, since my camera is very much not waterproof. (Quick tip: Doggy poop bags make great camera protectors!) This certainly wasn't a bad hike, just not a very interesting one.
