Deep River

Bushy Hill Nature Center

Date visited: 3/13/2021

This place was disappointing. It's an old religious camp. I'm not sure how long the camp has been closed, or if it was just closed because it's the off-season, or if it was closed because of COVID. There are a series of trails here, including one that circles the lake. The All-Trails app had the trail labled as "easy," but the terrain was challenging...especially with two small dogs in tow. We got about half way around the lake, when we were blocked by a series of trees that look like they had recently fallen. I couldn't find any way around either, at least not with the dogs, so we had to turn-around and go back the way we came.

Union Street Sanctuary

Date visited: 4/16/2022

This is a short trail found off Union Street near downtown Deep River. We followed the instructions on the Deep River Land Trust website, and parked at the library, and walked a quarter of a mile to the trail head. The walk from the car to the trail is actually longer than the trail itself. This loop trail is real short. The trail starts between two resedential properties, so it feels like you are walking through someone's yard to get there. It's a nice trail for what it is, but certainly not worth a long drive if you don't live in the neighborhood.

Downtown Deep River

Date visited: 4/16/2022

Since the Union Street Sanctuary trail was so short, and since we were already parked at the library, I decided to extend our walk by walking up and down Main Street. Downtown Deep River has that small New England town feel, with a lot of small shops and businesses. We managed to walk a very pleasant two miles here.
