Mohawk Trail & Mohawk State Forest

Date visited: 4/14/2021

This wasn't a planned stop. We were headed to Kent Falls and passed this state forest, so I stopped to let the dogs out. It was a good thing too, because they really had to go! I decided to take some time and hike part of the trail. There was this cool hiker's structure, and a little further on was a neat rock formation.

The Bend

Date visited: 5/14/2022

I was looking for the trail head for the Trinity River Trail, and thought it was here, since there is big parking lot with a big sign.... but there is no trail here. Instead, this seems to be some sort of boat launch. There was some kind of kayaking event wrapping up. Since there is a good view of the Cornwall Covered Bridge over the Housatonic, I decided to take some pictures here first, before heading down the street to the trail I was looking for.

Trinity River Trail

Date visited: 5/14/2022

I wasn't quite sure where this trail was. It's not in the All-Trails app. The trail head is at the end of Lower River Road. The trail continues between the train tracks and the Housatonic River along the path of an old dirt road (Lower River Road used to be longer). To get here, we had to pass through Trinity Retreat Center, a religious retreat area that has property on both sides of the road. I wasn't 100% sure I was allowed to be here. The trail itself is wide and flat, and runs along side the river. There are areas with access to the river for those that fish. The trail wasn't that exciting. The sculpture in the last picture below is interesting. This was near the trail head on the retreat property, and is called the "Trinity Root", created by sculptor Steve Tobin. It is inspired by a large sycamore tree that fell at St. Paul's Cathedral during the 9/11 attacks. The uprooted tree fell in such a way that it helped protect the historic chapel and tombstones from damage when the towers collapsed.
