We had record warmth in the northeast yesterday, so I was surprised that there was still snow on the ground here. We parked at the trail head on Route 12, and first headed east for two miles. Most of the trail was covered in a slush, which was hard to walk through, but Mandy loved it! The trail runs along side Route 12 for a bit, before veering away from the road into the woods. It's pretty much just a long straight, flat path. The snow actually made it more interesting, but I must admit, I wasn't really prepared for the slush. It was 62 degrees the day before in Boston, and I was thinking this was just going to be a spring-like day on a bike path, so I didn't have my heavy duty footwear on. Thankfully, my feet didn't get that wet, but the dogs were a mess. We also did the eastern part of the trail, which runs for about a mile. The snow was completely cleared from this section. This part of the trail heads toward downtown Winchendon, and passes Whitney Pond along the way. The trail ends near the YMCA, and some old buildings. We explored for a bit before heading back, walking six miles in total.
