Upton State Forest

Date visited: 2/8/2025

This was a fun 3.75 mile hike through the woods. We hiked a loop starting with the trail name "Park Road". We followed that trail until we reached "Dean Pond Road". We then followed that trail to the frozen pond. On the way back, instead of completing the long loop via "Loop Road", we took a shortcut using "Middle Road" that leads back to "Park Road" near the start of the loop. Even though the trails are wide and all named something "Road", they are closed to traffic. The surface was packed snow and ice so I couldn't tell if the trails were paved, gravel, or dirt. "Middle Road" is more narrow than the others, and I could tell that was more of a standard dirt trail. The hike had some hills, but the inclines were gradual. The forest contains a lot of pine trees, so there was still a good deal of green color. The trails were moderately busy. Most other hikers were there with their dogs, and some were off-leash, but none were aggressive or anything. The weather forecast was calling for a moderate snow storm later in the evening, so it was good to get out since I don't know how much opportunity we will have upcoming for adventures.
