We were passing through the small town of Tyringham, which is really in the middle of nowhere. On the way through, we passed this estate, maintained by the Trustees of Reservations, and decided to stop. There is a a beautiful garden area, and a trail that leads to ruins of an old mansion. We didn't have time to hike out to the ruins. We were here late, and it gets dark so early in October. We did tour the garden area, which is very nice. There is a small hill with a great view of the fall foliage on a nearby mountain. We might have to return here sometime to check out the place when there is more daylight, and visit the ruins.
Since we didn't get a chance to hike out to the ruins on our first visit, we returned here a few weeks later. This time we hiked the entire loop trail, including the ruins. We even explored the inside of the ruins. It was a pretty steep climb at the beginning of the trail. It's amazing how quick the fall colors fade. When we were here the first time, the leaves were still changing. Now less than three weeks later, the leaves had all mostly fallen.
