Albany Hudson Electric Trail

Date visited: 9/8/2025

This is part of the Empire State Trail bike trail that runs through New York. This section is known as the "Albany Hudson Electric Trail", named that way because it runs along an old electric trolley corridor. We parked at the commuter lot at the corner of US 9 and NY Route 9H, and headed along the trail to the center of Valatie Village. We also went to River Street Park and Beaver Cotton Mill Overlook, as part of our 4.5 mile walk through the village. We actually only covered a short section of the bike trail, from the trail head near the commuter lot to Main Street.

River Street Park

Date visited: 9/8/2025

We stopped here as part of our walk through Valatie Village. This is a town park along River Street with a small open area that includes a gazebo, and a hiking trail that runs along side Kinderhook Creek. The trail is about a mile long, with a few spots along the way to access the creek.

Valatie Village

Date visited: 9/8/2025

This was basically a walk down Main Street, from the intersection of Albany Hudson Electric Trail to Beaver Cotton Mill Overlook and back. This is a typical small town Main Street lined with little shops and restaurants. There's a dirt path through the woods, just east of the bridge over Valatie Kill, that leads to a waterfall. Mandy and Lexi cooled off in the running water.

Beaver Cotton Mill Overlook

Date visited: 9/8/2025

This is the site of an old Cotton Mill off Main Street at the center of Valatie Village. The overlook is a platform where you can view the old dam on Kinderhook Creek. We also climbed over the guard rail and headed down a short trail to access the creek from ground level. There was a good deal of trash down there, and it looks like the area is used for kids to hang out. There were better views of the waterfall from here, compared to the overlook. There was a good flow of water on the left side of the dam, but only some trickles over the rest of the dam.
