Pakachoag Hiking Trail

Date visited:1/6/2024

This wasn't a great day, and this wasn't a great trail. With a Nor'easter forecasted in the evening, we needed somewhere for our adventure, since we may not be able to get out again for a while. The trail starts at Dr. Arthur & Dr. Martha Pappas Recreation Complex, and goes through a wooded area before it reaches a large open field. The trail runs along side the field, at the edge of the Worcester Flood Diversion Channel. It's probably nicer in the late spring, summer and early fall, but that could be said of most places we visit. We have to visit somewhere in the winter! Actually, the All-Trails reviews indicate that that the trail is overgrown, with ticks and poison ivy in the summer, so maybe it is better to visit in the winter. The out and back trail is about two miles total, and the way back is all up hill. My Apple Watch reported a 260 foot climb. There were a couple stream crossings on rocks, and one nice bridge. Like I said, not a great trail, but not terrible and it gave us something to do before the storm.

We were here because this is where the Pakachoag Hiking Trail starts. After hiking that trail, we walked around the complex. There are athletic fields, a playground and a pavilion. Dogs are not allowed on any of the fields, but are allowed in the rest of the park. There's about a half mile of paved sidewalks that circle the fields, not enough for a separate visit, but a perfect add-on to the hiking trail.
