Even though we had visited Empire State Plaza before, this was our first real hike in the state of New York. We did the "East Trails" first. These trails were less than half a mile, and were quite ordinary until we hit the very cool staircase made of logs. The cooler trails were on the main section of the trail. We couldn't do the Marsh trail. The sign read "Marsh Trail Partially Flooded. During 2020, beavers built a dam across the Mill River downstream of here, causing the Mill River to overflow and flood much of the Marsh Trail. Marsh Trail is closed as marked. Mill River now flows through flooded marsh." Pesky beavers!

The main section of the preserve seems massive. We hiked a two mile loop than included the Blue Entrance Trail, Black Mansion Trail, Cottage Trail, Old Carraige Road and the White Entrance Trail. This barely scratched the surface of the trails here. The section we hiked is pretty interesting, as it contains a number of ruins. Most notably, the Black Mansion ruins. The mansion, built between 1890 & 1901, burned down in 1979. We also visited "James Crafts' Chemistry Research Laboratory" ruins, and the cottage ruins. One has to wonder what went down in that lab!
